London, Fall 2011

Westminster Palace in early morning light. This is the building where the UK Parliament meets. By the way, did you know that the Westminster clock tower is NOT called Big Ben? That's right. Big Ben is the name of the bell mounted in the tower.

Trafalgar Square at twilight. The brighly lit tower in the background is one of the towers of Westminster Palace, where the UK Parliament meets. I really liked Trafalgar Square. There was always a crowd, and usually a street performer or two.

Tower Bridge, completed in 1894, is one of those quintessential London sights. In the foreground is one of the many tourist boats that cruise back and forth on the Thames.

This distorted egg shaped building is London City Hall. The shape isn't caused by the wide angle lens I used; it really looks like this. In the background you can see Tower Bridge.

Camden Locks, in Camden Town. You have no idea how long I waited for one of those iconic double decker busses to cross the bridge for this shot. Such dedication. Camden Town is a little odd. It's like a giant flea market. If you're looking for kitsch, Camden Town is the place for you.

Regents Canal, just west of Camden Locks. Did you know London has canals? I almost died in one of these (or so a childhood memory tells me). Maybe right around where I took this shot. Or not. Regents Canal, and the path beside it, heads southwest around Regents Park, and made for a great walk one morning.

As you walk about London, you can't help noticing that the city is filled to the brim with military monuments - monuments to past wars, past generals, past victories, and past defeats. A product of the British imperial history. Most of the monuments didn't leave much of an impression, but this one stopped me cold.
