Spring 2012 Road Trip

.

Ah spring, when a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of .... road trips. I've had a hankering to "Go West", so I'm driving to Yellowstone and the Tetons and perhaps a few other places. I'll be posting photos from the trip here, as time and inclination and kismet and internet access allow.

It's the Super-Moon!! Oooooh!! Ahhhhh!! Photographed from Craig, CO, with the 24 MP Nikon D3X, 70-200 @ 200mm, and 2X teleconverter, on a tripod, using mirror lock-up and a cable release. For good measure, I cropped the hell out of it, and cranked the sharpening and vibrance to rediculous levels in Lightroom :-)

This shot is looking up Cascade Canyon from the eastern shore of Jenny Lake, in Grand Teton NP. The foreground peak on the left is Teewinot Mountain, and the one hiding just behind it is Grand Teton. The tops of both peaks, hidden by the clouds, extend above the top of the frame. The storm was just breaking up when I got there, and visibility of the peaks was changing rapidly. I shot dozens of images, trying to capture just the right mix of visibility, clouds, and light. This shot was one of the last in the series.

This was my room at the historic Wort Hotel, in Jackson, WY. It was all together too fancy for me, traveling by myself. But they gave me a good rate (well, good compared to their normal rate), and it was right next to the town square, surrounded by galleries and good restaurants, so it seemed like a perfect choice.

Soda Butte, in Yellowstone NP, is the small mound in the foreground. The Absoroka Range, and a snow storm, provides the backdrop. If you go between the two background peaks on the right, you eventually reach Cooke City, MT, just outside the park. The storm dumped six inches of snow in Cooke City, while Soda Butte recieved only a dusting. After taking this shot, I drove up to Cooke City for breakfast. A couple of hours later, heading back west, all the snow on Soda Butte had melted. I was lucky in my timing.
